Early intervention is the support provided to infants and young children who are showing signs of developmental delay or who have a diagnosed condition. It is usually provided by an allied health professional (e.g. occupational therapist, speech pathologist, physiotherapist, psychologist) with additional training, and focuses on building foundational skills — such as communication, movement, play, and independence — during the early years when children learn and develop most rapidly.
By identifying and supporting challenges early, intervention can improve long-term outcomes, strengthen confidence, and help children participate more fully in everyday life at home, school, and in the community.

You don't need a diagnosis to get in touch. If any of these feel familiar, it's worth a conversation.
- Speech, language, or social development that's behind what you'd expect for their age
- Difficulty with movement, balance, or coordination
- Unusual reactions to sound, touch, light, or change
- Trouble settling, sleeping, feeding, or with daily routines
- Limited eye contact, play, or back-and-forth interaction
- A diagnosed condition that benefits from early support
- A family history that warrants closer monitoring
- Concerns raised by your maternal child health nurse, GP, or paediatrician
