Early intervention is the support provided to infants and young children who are showing signs of developmental delay or who have a diagnosed condition. It is usually provided by an allied health professional (e.g. occupational therapist, speech pathologist, physiotherapist, psychologist) with additional training, and focuses on building foundational skills — such as communication, movement, play, and independence — during the early years when children learn and develop most rapidly.

By identifying and supporting challenges early, intervention can improve long-term outcomes, strengthen confidence, and help children participate more fully in everyday life at home, school, and in the community.

Is this for our family?

Common signs early intervention helps with

You don't need a diagnosis to get in touch. If any of these feel familiar, it's worth a conversation.

  • Speech, language, or social development that's behind what you'd expect for their age
  • Difficulty with movement, balance, or coordination
  • Unusual reactions to sound, touch, light, or change
  • Trouble settling, sleeping, feeding, or with daily routines
  • Limited eye contact, play, or back-and-forth interaction
  • A diagnosed condition that benefits from early support
  • A family history that warrants closer monitoring
  • Concerns raised by your maternal child health nurse, GP, or paediatrician
